Preamble:

In this twelfth lesson you will begin to consider 'The Knowledge of God the Redeemer,' which is book two of 'The Institutes of the Christian Religion.' For this lesson you will be required to read through the first two chapters of book two. The best approach is to read these chapters first, and then to read them again with the questions before you.



12.1 BY THE FALL AND REVOLT OF ADAM THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE WAS DELIVERED TO THE CURSE, AND DEGENERATED FROM ITS ORIGINAL CONDITION; THE DOCTRINE OF ORIGINAL SIN (Chapter 1)

Questions:

What was the nature of the sin that brought about man's fall in the Garden of Eden? What were the implications of this for mankind?

 

Explain what is meant by the term 'original sin.'

 

In what does the error of Pelagius differ in regards to the doctrine of original sin?

 

Explain why Calvin disputes the idea that Adam's sin is propagated by immitation?


What part of man is affected by sin? Give reasons for your answer.


12.2 MAN HAS NOW BEEN DEPRIVED OF FREEDOM OF CHOICE AND BOUND OVER TO MISERABLE SERVITUDE (Chapter 2)

Question:

What is meant by 'free will' in theology? Explain the position of free will in man since the fall?


Explain the relationship between free will and slavery to sin?


What does Calvin mean when he says that the 'natural gifts' of man are corrupted because of sin? Is this view correct? Explain your answer.


Is man's understanding affected by the fall of man into sin? Explain your answer.


What is 'spiritual darkness?' How does one come out of such darkness? What part does regeneration play in this?


What does Calvin understand by 'natural law?' How does this natural law render man inexcusable before God?
