Part Eight - The Institutes of the Christian Religion

What's On This Page:

Preamble:

In this ninth lesson you will continue to consider 'The Knowledge of God the Creator,' which is book one of 'The Institutes of the Christian Religion.' For this lesson you will be required to read chapter 15 of book one. The best approach is to read the chapter first, and then to read it again with the questions before you.

9.1 DISCUSSION OF HUMAN NATURE AS CREATED, OF THE FACULTIES OF THE SOUL, OF THE IMAGE OF GOD, OF FREE WILL, AND OF THE ORIGINAL INTEGRITY OF MAN'S NATURE (Chapter 15).

Questions:

Describe the condition of man when first created? What was man like?

What does it mean for man to be created in the Image of God? In what way does salvation aid our understanding of being created in the Image of God? Explain.

What is the soul? Explain the origin of the soul in man? What is Calvin's view on the origin of the soul?

Was man created with a 'free will?' Explain what this means?
