4. THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD THE CREATOR
Part Three - The Institutes of the Christian Religion

What's On This Page:

Preamble:

In this fourth lesson you will continue to consider 'The Knowledge of God the Creator,' which is book one of 'The Institutes of the Christian Religion.' For this lesson you will be required to read chapters 6 through 9 of book one. The best approach is to read these chapters first, and then to read them again with the questions before you.

4.1 SCRIPTURE IS NEEDED AS GUIDE AND TEACHER FOR ANYONE WHO WOULD COME TO GOD THE CREATOR (Chapter 6)

Questions:

Why was it necessary for the Scriptures to be given to man? Can anyone be saved without the written Word? Explain

Who is the Author of Scripture? Why was Scripture preserved in written form?

4.2 SCRIPTURE MUST BE CONFIRMED BY THE WITNESS OF THE SPIRIT. THUS MAY ITS AUTHORITY BE ESTABLISHED AS CERTAIN; AND IT IS A WICKED FALSEHOOD THAT ITS CREDIBILITY DEPENDS ON THE JUDGMENT OF THE CHURCH (Chapter 7)

Questions:

From what or whom does the Bible receive its authority? Explain what role the church plays in this?

Why is arguing with unbelievers about God and the Bible a useless method of evangelism? What is needed in order for a person to believe the Scriptures? Please give reasons for your answer.

4.3 SO FAR AS HUMAN REASON GOES, SUFFICIENTLY FIRM PROOFS ARE AT HAND TO ESTABLISH THE CREDIBILITY OF SCRIPTURE (Chapter 8)

Questions:

Can the Bible be descibed as self-authenticating? What exactly does this mean (Please give examples)? How is the Christian helped by this?

Does the preservation of Scripture over the many centuries strenthen the Bible's claim to a Divine origin? Explain.

Questions: Why does Calvin maintain, that 'those who wish to prove to unbelievers that Scripture is the Word of God are acting foolishly?' What has been your experience of this?

4.4 FANATICS, ABANDONING SCRIPTURE AND FLYING OVER TO REVELATION, CAST DOWN ALL THE PRINCIPLES OF GODLINESS (Chapter 9)

Questions:

What role does the Holy Spirit play in revelation today? What are some of the practical implications of this for today's church?

NOTE: If you wish to email me regarding your answers to this lesson, please copy and paste them into an email (Attachments will not be opened). I will then get back to you as soon as I can (expect a delay due to various committments).
