Preamble:

In this eleventh lesson you will continue to consider 'The Knowledge of God the Creator,' which is book one of 'The Institutes of the Christian Religion.' For this lesson you will be required to read chapters 17 and 18 of book one. The best approach is to read the chapter first, and then to read it again with the questions before you.



11.1 HOW WE MAY APPLY THIS DOCTRINE TO OUR GREATEST BENEFIT (Chapter 17).

Questions:

What is the first cause of all things? Explain how this applies to human affairs?


What does Calvin mean by the 'secret plans' of God? What does Scripture teach about God's secret plan?


Does the plan of God eliminate human responsibility? Explain.

 

Why should believers pray if all things are determined by God's plan, and carried out by His providence?


If God has both His secret plan and His revealed will (His Word), by what should we order our lives? Explain the reason for your answer?


Explain how the doctrines of God's secret plan (His decree) and providence are an encouragement to believers?

 

Explain the term, 'secondary causes?'


Explain what is mean't by, 'God repenting,' in the Scriptures? Does this mean that God's plan is subject to change?


11.2 GOD SO USES THE WORKS OF THE UNGODLY, AND SO BENDS THEIR MINDS TO CARRY OUT HIS JUDGMENTS, THAT HE REMAINS PURE FROM EVERY STAIN. (Chapter 18).

Questions:

Explain the relationship between evil and God's decree? Is God the author of sin? Explain.


Can God's secret will be different to His revealed will? Explain.
